Natural extension

This bathroom offers an oasis of relaxation and a link to the natural environment. Contrasting tones and textures provide a sense of drama

Rich, natural materials and a walk-through layout can bring the feeling of a resort-style space in tune with its environment. This bathroom illustrates this concept well.

The brief was to create a luxurious retreat for the owner as well as extend the entertainment layout of the property, says interior designer Amanda Hookham.

"Travertine walls contrasted with lighter, marble quartz floors were used to achieve this," says Hookham. "The textured floors are a tonal extension to the exterior sandstone pavers and provide a gripping surface for the bathroom's wet areas."

The solid surfaces temper sand-blasted glass doors, minimalist chrome fittings and a pared-back style of vanity.

"As well as providing further contrast, the extensive use of glass and mirrors bring light to the space," says Hookham. "The natural stone materials are also a link to the scenic native bush that surrounds the home. Everything is designed to create a feeling of openness and luxury."

To continue the feel of a resort-style retreat, occupants step from the steam room, via a glass door, to the swimming pool, which doubles as a plunge pool.
