Initially in the too hard basket, this bathroom design achieves a warm, uncluttered look that maximises the now future-proofed skylights overhead – soft lighting choices make the space equally appealing at night

Designed by Elliot Johnson

From the designer:

What the owner wanted

This was the last room in the home to be renovated – a project that had been put in the 'too hard basket' for years.

The homeowner wanted a space that finally matched the quality and feel of the rest of the house – elegant, modern, and with a layout that made better use of the natural light from the glass ceiling/skylight.

The brief called for something timeless and warm, without overcomplicating the design.

What we achieved

We created a calm, luxurious space with vertical feature tiles used to draw the eye upward – adding height and interest to the room.

A freestanding bath served as a sculptural centrepiece, giving the bathroom a sense of calm and sophistication.

All walls were fully tiled to enhance the sense of quality and finish.

We replaced the original glass in the skylight to ensure all seals were watertight and modern, eliminating any risk of future leaks.

Soft lighting was introduced through an LED mirror and under-vanity lighting, helping the space to feel warm and inviting — especially at night.

Issues encountered

Access to the property was a major challenge.

The house sits down a long driveway shared with eight other homes, and during the renovation, all of the driveway concrete was being replaced.

This created tight timeframes and tricky logistics for material deliveries and waste removal.

Despite these challenges, we maintained clear communication with all parties and kept the project running smoothly.
