In with the new
A backlit glass vanity, presented at a trade show, inspired the design of this remodeled bathroom
A home remodeling project is as likely to be conducted over a number of years as it is to be completed all at one time. Whatever the timeline, though, it's a good idea to have an overall plan.
The owners of this home were in the process of giving their traditional-style home a more modern look, so they applied the same rationale to the family bathroom on the lower level of the house.
Bath designer Jim Meloy saw a wall-mounted, free-floating glass vanity, surrounded by LED-lit wave glass panels, at a trade show and the owners immediately liked it.

With an integrated mirror and faucet, this piece has become the focus of the new bathroom. In addition to having a contemporary appearance, the bathroom also includes some high-tech fittings such as the motion-sensor activated faucet on the vanity.
Meloy increased the space in the small bathroom by replacing the main door with a pocket slider and removing a second door altogether.
A closet was also removed, which allowed a larger shower enclosure, incorporating a five-bar rain-tree shower head and a supplementary hand-held shower. The walls are a combination of Jerusalem marble and honey onyx tiles, flanked around the top of the enclosure with convex honey onyx accent tiles.
Back-lit open shelves provide a flexible space for towels or for displaying art.
