Vintage elements and a close attention to detail create a practical and cosy environment for this bathroom
An individually designed bathroom space can be addressed in terms of aesthetics and practicalities. The bathroom on these pages, for example, features antique elements that sit alongside functional, contemporary touches.
Part of a new addition to a home, this bathroom and master bedroom were created to instill an air of retreat, says architect Joe Pica.
"A refurbished bath and vintage washbasins are combined with traditional tumbled tilework and exposed wood to create an old world, private feel," Pica says. "Eclectic pieces, such as the antique his-and-her marble basins, differ in style and size, with one larger and the other more feminine."
However, there are design features that introduce contrasting contemporary touches.
The antique tub, for example,fills from the bottom up. Cabinetry, custom-made from purple heart wood, features niche, lined jewellery pockets.
"From the daylight-true light over a make-up mirror to the sculptural dividing wall with inset mirrors, the space has many delicate finishing touches," the architect says. "Even the traditional-style oval mirror conceals a medicine cabinet."
