Comfort and joy
Timber slatwork, feature lighting, custom rugs, stand-out wallpaper – glam touches complement pragmatic elements in this relaxed interior

From the interior designers:
The home owners engaged O’Neil Architects to design their forever home.
We had worked previously with the couple on their earthquake damaged home 10 years ago and when they were building their new home in Merivale, Christchurch they came back to us as they fully trusted what I had created for them in the past.
I knew their style – they were looking for something new and innovating.
One owner loves a little bit of glam – a few sparkles and velvet textures along with practical clean surfaces for the working areas.

We designed the kitchen using Neolith hard surfaces and also adopted this look and feel around the fireplace in the casual living.
We also added colour and texture adjacent to the large curved island to create interest.
Neolith was then used in the powder room.
Designing the slatted formation was another feature that runs consistently throughout the home, including for the casual and formal fireplaces, the stairway and powder room walls, the bathroom vanities and WIR details.
The soft interior pallet is based on calming blues, with golds and soft pastels.
I would describe this as classic contemporary luxury.
Feature lighting in the dining area is one of the details we enjoy while plain walls and soft voiles over the windows allowing the Soktas wall lights in large and small sizes to act as artworks.
Adding pendants over the table completed the Soktas story.
The Woodwrights bespoke solid timber table in a soft grey wash, with matching chairs, is a lovely tonal change to the light oak that plays a dominant part throughout the home – showing that not everything has to match and providing a lovely contrast.
The owner was not afraid to use wallpapers, this making every room feel special and have a layered comfort.
Newly designed rugs and furniture were also part of the brief – nothing was left by chance, everything was detailed to perfection.
