Achieving balance in the decor of a master bathroom can be tricky. This room needs to reflect the whole-house aesthetic, but as a private space, it will benefit from an approach uniquely its own. This contemporary bathroom, part of a condominium remodel by designer Ron Scolman, achieves both these aims. The owner wanted the bathroom to reflect her love of color and work well as a utilitarian space at the same time, says Scolman."The red and navy blue tiles continue the use of these colors in other areas of the home. However, the azure tiles are unique to this space. They wrap up the wall and over the bathtub so the color is all-encompassing when in the tub," says the designer.Tilework was chosen partly because it is easy to maintain, but also to display the designer's attention to detail. "All tiled surfaces were configured to ensure no half-tiles were required. This creates a precision finish that reflects a artisanal, hand-crafted approach."A prominent use of wood on the cabinetry, rear wall and a soffit over the vanities extends the use of this material which features throughout the residence. Both wood and tiles bring texture to the room, and the neutral off-white wall has an interesting, irregular finish."Other walls are finished in a material made of thousands of glass beads that is hung much like wallpaper they reflect light from the beadwork," Scolman says. View of seating in the bedroom with standing lamps, window and drapes. The bathroom has an unmistakable sculptural presence. The navy-toned wall is wedge shaped and the vanity alongside is configured to accommodate its angled plane. Similarly, the aqua privacy wall between the toilet and bath has substantial proportions that make it another feature. Opposite, the curved red wall adds to the list of strong shapes. The powder room was also completely reinvented by Scolman."Here, larger tiles were introduced to create a furniture-like effect, still following the colorway of the home," he says. "The orange basin, edged in gold, and the sculptural lights are focal points."
