Designstory Interiors wins the 2026 TIDA Australia Designer Bathroom of the Year

The original bathroom in this 1970s townhouse offered a distinctive starting point, featuring a raked glass ceiling and an enclosed garden courtyard.

However, the space was dominated by a large, sunken spa bath and no longer met the functional needs of a family with three adult children.

The design brief required preserving the garden outlook and original architectural character, while integrating a separate powder room within the existing footprint.

Inspired by the warm atmosphere of the owner’s favourite Mediterranean restaurant, the new design aims to feel organic and expressive while honouring the home's 1970s heritage.

Removing the sunken bath instantly opened up the floor plan.

This allowed for a more practical layout with clearly defined zones, all while maintaining the abundant natural light from the glass ceiling above.

The long walk-in shower acts as a dedicated zone within the room.

Its curved wall and cantilevered seat offer a sense of privacy, establishing a clean, sculptural presence.

This curved motif repeats across the tapware, basin, mirror, bath and toilet, softening the entire space and bringing cohesion to the design.

To enhance the connection between inside and outside, the interior wall colour extends out into the courtyard, visually lengthening the perspective.

The TIDA judges commended how effectively the redesign resolved technical and regulatory challenges, delivering a relaxed Mediterranean mood with a subtle retro edge.
