No matter what style you choose, there are two essential considerations in an effective bathroom design how it will relate to the rest of the home, and how to maximize efficiency within the constraints of the physical space.The owners of this bathroom asked designer Jewell Cassells to create an understated, refined and private ensuite that would be in keeping with the Cape Cod atmosphere running through the rest of the home."In response to this wish list, I introduced classic panel-fronted vanity cabinetry and a matching bathroom door, teamed with solid marble surfaces," says Cassells. "The custom-built wooden cabinets and millwork are painted white a hallmark of the Cape Cod style, which originated in colonial New England." The long, narrow bathroom, by architect Michael Wyatt, is divided into three spaces, with the toilet cubicle at one end, the shower stall at the other, and an inset bath and surround between the two."Breaking up the footprint of the room in this way tends to square up an elongated space," says the designer. "For the same reason, I opted for a series of mirrors opposite they help segment the long run of wall space. The four framed mirrors also provide a decorative focus and, through reflections, contribute to an overall sense of spaciousness."Another feature detail of this project is the chrome railing grid that fronts the bathtub a special request of the owners. Like the English tapware, this feature is more Art Deco in appearance, a reference to the time when the Cape Cod style became widely popular throughout the United States. "Natural light from a skylight overhead and the space-efficient layout combine to create a welcoming atmosphere," she says.
