Urban sanctuary - Rich neutral bathroom by Gary Lee Partners
Rich neutral bathroom by Gary Lee Partners

It's no surprise that the issue of privacy in low-rise urban homes today is a common design challenge for architects. However, the same problems often have to be faced even in a condominium on an upper level of a high-rise building.
This new 40-story Chicago condominium tower, featuring a contemporary concrete and glass design, includes 34 full-floor residences, each with large, private terraces on the east and west sides of the building. For the interior design scheme of the condominium featured on these pages, the owners wanted a transitional aesthetic with a modern edge. They also wanted the master bathroom suite to be a quiet and serene haven.

To ensure the bathroom is private and protected from the view of occupants of nearby high-rise apartments, the windows have been placed at a high level. Frosted glass provides privacy and lets in diffused natural light.
Rich, neutral colors for the walls and floors, dark-stained cabinetry, minimalist detailing and floor patterning intensify the peaceful ambiance. At the same time, the soft, gray-brown, glass-beaded wallcovering and natural stone used on the floor and bath surround give the bathroom space a lush, reflective look and introduce a subtle shimmer. The marble and glass provide a counterpoint to the dark cabinetry.

A whirlpool tub, a large separate shower with a seat, a two-sink vanity and separate toilet compartment all add to the sense that this bathroom has been designed as a sanctuary for its owners.
