One stand-out feature is the transition from each space to the next – these are illusions of sorts. In some cases, there are wall panels – with textured commercial vinyl wallcovering, detail moulding and sometimes mirror (same as the walls) – that actually pivot and can hold in place at 90 degrees if required (to appear like a nib wall).
These panels are frameless pivot doors – but they are as thick as the walls (100mm), lightweight, and blend with the walls to seamless effect.
In other cases, the bookcase cabinetry either slides sideways to reveal an entrance to a walk-in-robe or a prayer nook (the latter also provides a handy exit for one owner, so he can change and leave early for work without disturbing the family).
And another large section of bookcase actually pivots from the middle to reveal a storage room.
None of these entrance points are obvious doorways and they help to create a uniquely seamless, exciting experience.
Another feature in the space is the floor/wall/ceiling full wrap-around copper Bisazza mosaic in the ensuite which ties through all the areas with the metallic copper highlights of faux leather inserts in the cabinetry detailing.
The mosaic wrap-around features two punched-through illuminated circular holes – one in the ceiling, accommodating a glamorous chandelier, and the other in the wall, allowing for shelf storage for the freestanding spa bath. There is also more concealed shelf storage behind the bath.
The ensuite also features a walk-through shower with multi–showerheads as well as a full make-up vanity that incorporates a fridge and coffee zone.
Both the basin vanity and make-up vanity include thermoformed solid surface and several Polytec Woodmatt finishes – both for durability and extended good looks.
Both walk-in-robes feature robe pull-downs for maximum use of space, metallic faux leather detailing, jewellery displays, seating and loads of storage.
The oversized custom master bed and bedhead also reflects a maximum use of storage – all the secret upholstered panels opening to reveal shelving.
Plus there are pop-up power and charging facilities, concealed reading lights and a ‘gunslot’ shelf with mirror that creates the illusion of space and the feeling that you are looking through into another area.
Again the materials used are hardy velvets and several Polytec Woodmatt finishes – for both durability and enduring good looks.
The library/office is a multifunctional space for the parents and children.
The custom 4-way desk with metallic copper faux leather inlay detail offers connectivity via pop-up gpo/data ports and table lighting.
The back-bevelled design of the benchtop and waterfall ends (which are repeated throughout all the cabinetry design) is capped with a blackened aluminium which is also used to define the inlay and Woodmatt timber grain finishes.
The television area at the entry point to the new level appears to be a closed space by the use of the unique pivot door/walls (except when in their fixed open position).
This has a custom mirrored unit with back-beveled Woodmatt detailing, a concrete grey top and an automated tv mechanism so that it appears to be a slick looking sideboard under the shuttered windows when not in use.
A lot of effort was put into the lighting design.
The owners have a myriad of options when it comes to task lighting versus mood lighting.
There is a wealth of dimmable up-lighting and under-lighting; subtle low-lying pin-dot path lighting for late night bathroom visits; and there’s also feature pendant lights and trendy commercial track lighting for wardrobe tasks – almost creating a retail-like experience when selecting your attire.
Part of the success of this project is due the skilful handling of construction and trades by Stewart Homes, who has worked with Ultraspace on several other multi-award winning projects.
