Reaching for the skies

This sculptural home reaches upwards for sunlight and two-way coastal views – living spaces, and the concrete pool, are on the upper level while indoor and outdoor spiral stairways provide fun circulation

Designed by CplusC Architects + Builders

From the architect:

Commissioned by a dynamic family of four who have guests stay regularly, this project in Clovelly, Sydney transforms the original dwelling – a modest dilapidated weatherboard fisherman's cottage purchased as a deceased estate – into a contemporary, multi-level family home.

The design brief celebrates the stunning coastal views to the north towards North Bondi and south towards Coogee, while blending contemporary Australian living with bespoke architectural detailing.

The project creates a sanctuary for relaxing, socialising, long term family growth and reflects the owners' love for beachside living where swimming, snorkelling, and entertaining friends are a constant during Sydney's vibrant summers.

The program is laid out so the social spaces on the top floor make the most of the dual coastal views.

An elevated concrete pool provides an opportunity to cool off during the warmer months while remaining parts of the social spaces capture northern sun all day.

Private spaces, including bedrooms, gym and wine cellar, are located at the ground floors – still bathed in sun through the central courtyard that lets the triple height spiral stair shine.

Elevated and covered bridges suspended over the courtyard encourage the family to take a step outside when moving between spaces.

This project represents a harmonious fusion of several decades of personal family history, coastal lifestyle living, and forward-thinking design – a family retreat that honours its roots while embracing modern luxury.
