Transforming a small bathroom with a dated scheme into a spacious, contemporary interior is a challenging task. But, if you have to keep the layout the same and the bathtub in place, this task becomes even harder.

Which is why, when renovating the bathroom featured here, designer Jason Higham placed the emphasis on vibrant materials, slimline fittings and the creation of recessed storage areas.

"The owners desired a fresh, contemporary look, citing a bigger shower and modern fittings as essentials for the renovation," he says.

In keeping with the budget it was decided to leave the basic elements in their original positions.

Throughout the room, Seratone wall panels in alternating silver and blue provide a shimmering effect that is offset by the halogen ceiling lights.

"At night, the glossy finish on the walls make it appear as if the light is splashing down the walls," says Higham.

There are two key elements in the room the pronounced basin wall and the shower wing wall.

Higham removed the existing vanity, and in its place built a wall which contains a hidden storage cabinet behind a flush-fitted mirror. Below this is a recessed shelf for soap and accessories.

Beneath the shelf, a white, scooped basinprovides a visual centerpiece in the room.

"The basin appears to float in the space, providing a sculptural touch."

The shower wing wall that separates the bath and shower has a glass screen. This helps to contain water without visually enclosing the room.

Fittings were chosen to take up the least amount of space. In the bath, the faucet is a simple metal rod, with the mixer positioned on the shower wall at the other end. The compact shower head swivels for height and angle adjustment, offering flexibilitywithout clutter.
