Calm and cohesive

I worked closely with the empty-nester owners on this master suite, part of a new build.

The master suite flows off the central passageway and takes in the stunning view of the Matakana township and beyond. 

It has a lovely separation from the main living space and the guest wing – creating its own little oasis. 

In addition, the ensuite bathroom has a natural flow from the the master bedroom and master walk in wardrobe.

While we began with a collection of inspiration images that helped guide the direction of the design, our goal was ultimately to create a timeless and tranquil master ensuite that celebrated the stunning Matakana outlook.

Tile choices bring warmth and a sense of movement

Large-format floor and wall tiles were selected for their beautiful warm tones and subtle movement, creating a calm and cohesive backdrop. 

There were some pressure points regarding the size of the bath, exact plumbing locations, and shower entry point, these were natural resolved throughout the design and build process. 

We knew we wanted a large walk in shower and the homeowners were really keen to have the bath nestled in the window space looking out to the stunning view, so the layout of the bathroom evolved pretty naturally. 

Separating toilet from ensuite brings sense of space

Separating the toilet from the main master ensuite space was at the owner's request and I think this helped create the grand, spacious overall feel. 

Plus, it’s always a plus if the toilet can be discreetly tucked away out of sight!

Lighting provides atmosphere – and highlights tiling

As part of this design, we wanted to capture beautiful soft lighting. 

The owners had a wonderful lighting designer involved in the project while I made suggestions on wall lighting placement, LED strip lighting to the vanity, and surround lighting to the mirrors – all adding to the overall mood of the space. 

Of course the lighting design also helped to showcase the bathroom's stunning large porcelain tiles.

Powder room has a distinct vibe

In contrast to the restrained master ensuite, the powder room – in a separate part of the home – was designed as a more dramatic and memorable space.
