A little unexpected

The owner’s brief was to create a bathroom that felt calm, personal and retreat-like, while still having a strong sense of colour, texture and individuality. 

She was drawn to soft creamy tones, but was not afraid of colour, and wanted the space to feel layered, earthy and a little unexpected. 

There was a lot to achieve within a modest footprint, including a bath with a view and a generous two-person shower.

Different tiles each bring a different texture and mood

Three different tiles were used throughout the space, each bringing a different texture and mood, but all sitting within the same soft natural palette. 

An outdoor floor tile was selected for its more tactile, natural finish underfoot, creating contrast against the polished brass fixtures and softer curves within the room.

A key challenge was balancing the number of functional requirements without making the room feel busy or overworked. 

The solution was to create strong design moments that also served a purpose. 

Floating shower ledge provides optimum functionality 

In the shower, the floating ledge was designed as both a practical seat and a feature, offering a place to sit, shave or pause. 

Rather than using a standard niche, this ledge creates a more architectural moment within the shower and adds to the spa-like feeling of the room.

To soften the harder architectural lines, curved forms were introduced through the freestanding bath, arched mirror and gently radiused shower glass. 

These curves help the space feel more relaxed and balanced, while the brass deck-mounted vanity tapware, dual rain heads and warm globe lighting add a refined, hotel-like layer.

Ribbed vanity offers depth and texture

The custom ribbed vanity brings depth and texture, while the colour links beautifully with the green tile.

 Vertical heated towel rails provide practicality without interrupting the design, and the recessed bath niche with LED lighting creates a soft evening glow.

The completed bathroom gives the homeowners a space that feels like a private retreat at the end of a busy day.
