Top of the world bathroom by architect Brad Lamoureux
Contemporary master suite maximises small space
It's invariably a balancing act when you want to make the most of a great view, but also need to provide privacy for a master suite. Throw in a smallish footprint and it becomes even more of a design challenge.
This suite, on the upper level of a three-story house in Vancouver, presents a contemporary solution to the problem.
Architect Brad Lamoureux says the suite provides a bathroom that is an extension of the bedroom, although it can be closed off if required.
"There was simply not enough space to have a separate walk-in closet, so closet space was provided within the bathroom," he says. "But this was disguised with flush walnut veneer doors that look like a wall when closed. There's also another wall of storage at the side during the design process, the owners started referring to the bathroom as the locker room' and the name has stuck."

Maximizing the natural light in the bathroom was another challenge.
"We needed to introduce light without sacrificing privacy the neighboring houses are very close," says Lamoureux. "The solution was a light monitor that extends over the hall beyond the bathroom. A glazed wall above the mirror lets light pass through in both directions."
Light also enters the shower through a window that is high enough to ensure the shower is not overlooked, and by much larger windows facing the view.
"The owners wanted to be able to enjoy the view while showering. These windows are positioned so the owners have the required privacy."
Visual continuity is assured by the use of similar materials in both the bedroom and bathroom. Porcelain-tiled flooring features throughout the space, and highly figured walnut lines several walls and appears on the long, cantilevered vanity.
Other materials include glass mosaics in an Art Deco green, which add a lively touch, and glazed dark-blue bricks. These feature on two chimney walls that flank the bedroom. One of these walls features an outdoor fireplace, which is on the "martini" deck off the bedroom.
