Owner brief

The owner's brief was to create a bathroom inspired by the Arrowtown aesthetic, drawing on earthy tones, layered textures, muted colours, and a sense of quiet drama. 

The homeowners wanted a space that moved away from a conventional white bathroom, instead embracing warmth, depth, and material richness.

The design needed to feel sophisticated and atmospheric while still remaining calm and highly functional. 

Texture, natural tones, and layered finishes were key to creating a bathroom that felt grounded, luxurious, and connected to the character of its surroundings.

Design statement

This bathroom was designed as a richly layered retreat, with inspiration drawn from the Arrowtown aesthetic. 

Earthy tones, tactile finishes, and muted colour were used to create a dramatic yet calming interior that feels warm, grounded, and refined.

Rather than relying on white surfaces, the palette embraces travertine-inspired tiles, warm brown hues, soft stone tones, and aged brass accents to bring depth and softness to the space. 

Adding detail

A fluted tile detail was introduced to add rhythm, texture, and visual interest, creating a subtle play of light and shadow across the walls. 

This textural element gives the bathroom a refined architectural quality while enhancing the overall warmth of the scheme.

The generous vanity is a key feature of the room – its extended length creates a strong, elegant presence, while the combination of two materials adds visual interest and balance. 

The lighter basin section contrasts beautifully with the darker timber-toned base, preventing the vanity from feeling too heavy while still maintaining a grounded, architectural feel.

Aged brass fittings bring warmth

Aged brass fittings bring warmth and a softly aged quality to the space, complementing the natural stone tones and adding a quiet sense of luxury. 

The deep brown freestanding bath acts as a sculptural focal point, reinforcing the moody palette and creating a considered departure from the expected white bath.

Overall, the bathroom feels textural, intimate, and refined – a space that reflects the natural beauty and understated drama of Arrowtown while offering a warm, cocooning retreat.
