Stepping out
Large windows, French doors opening onto a sheltered balcony, and soft, green, glass-tiled walls create a spa-like atmosphere in this spacious master bathroom
Privacy is clearly a key feature in any bathroom design. But how it is achieved depends on a variety of factors, such as proximity to neighbors, the layout of the room, and its position within the house.
When architect Dick Clark renovated the master bathroom in this home, the owners wanted it to be a spa-like retreat away from the rest of the house.
"The master suite occupies the entire top level of the house, which creates a feeling of privacy. And, because the nearest neighbors are half a mile away across the river, the space isn't overlooked by other homes either," says Clark.
Clark made use of this privacy and the views of the river and the city as the basis for the bathroom design.

"We added large windows above the bathtub, and French doors that open from the shower enclosure out onto the balcony. An outdoor staircase makes the garden and swimming pool seem closer.
"The indoor-outdoor connection adds a special element, making this space seem far more than just a bathroom. Instead, it feels like a small, peaceful, private spa," says the architect.
Translucent grey-green glass tiles, covering most of the wall surfaces, emphasize the connection with the garden and distant view.
"The glass tiles also contribute a feeling of depth to the bathroom, while the natural limestone tiles on the floor create warmth and add texture," says Clark.
With the combination of large windows and French doors along one wall, and counter-to-ceiling mirrors above the two vanities, the room feels spacious and light.
The design allows for two people to use the bathroom in comfort. It has two sinks and vanities, plus a separate make-up counter. The shower includes two sets of shower fittings, as well as a separate third shower head suspended from the ceiling in the center of the enclosure. Two dressing rooms open off the bathroom and, for privacy, the toilet is concealed behind a frosted glass pocket door.
