Shimmer and shine
Mosaic tiles reflect the light in seemingly infinite ways, creating drama and shadowplay in this bathroom
Although it might be one of the smallest rooms in the home, the guest bathroom needn't be the most humble. Adding a little sparkle to the decor can transform the room, making it appear a much larger and lighter space.
This apartment bathroom is used by the owners' teenage children and overnight guests. To give the bathroom its own special character, architect Andrew Craig of Leuschke Group Architects selected glass mosaic tiles for the walls, shower and benchtop.
"Each tiny glass tile projects the light in a different way to create the illusion of a multi-faceted interior," he says.
Halogen lights are strategically placed to enhance the patterns made by the mosaics.
A large mirror above the twin basins and glass shelving adds to a sense of space, belyingthe fact that at 4m x 2m, this is a small room.
The mirror and glass shelving are also a feature of the master ensuite, and the large porcelain floor tiles continue throughout the apartment.
"This bathroom has its own distinctive features yet fits into the overall design of the apartment. Continuity was a key consideration," Craig says.
