The art connoisseurs who own this home wanted their fine tastes reflected in the choice of decor throughout. Avid collectors, the owners have filled their apartment with eclectic paintings and sculptures, the pieces thrown into relief by plain white walls. This ensuite bathroom, one of two off the master bedroom, also serves as exhibition space, showcasing a piece of pre-Colombian sculpture, and is no exception to the color scheme.

The white Calacutta marble adorning the walls was selected for its rich gold and gray veining and translucency, which lends the stone the appearance of depth. The slabs were cut as large as was practical for transport and specifically to best present the marble's natural patterning.

Architect Peter Tow says the stone gives the bathroom a luxurious feel and is a work of art in its own right.

"The homeowners are art lovers with modern tastes and wanted something more sophisticated than just a pretty bathroom. The marble slabs have been cut and arranged to present a kind of abstract landscape that flows across the walls."

With a strong focus on the composition of the marble, Tow was at pains not to obscure or distract from it, installing a frameless glass panel shower and keeping other furnishings and fittings simple.

"The teak veneer sink cabinet has a linear grain giving it a sleek, modern look. It matches the kitchen cabinetry and has Art Deco connotations, fitting the period the apartment was built. The stool is a simple Corbusier design," says Tow.
