Natural charm
Earthy colors and materials, clean lines and open spaces create a calm, serene atmosphere in this master bathroom

As family circumstances alter, so too do domestic requirements. This home was originally designed for a family with four young children, and twenty years later the owners felt it was time to remodel it to suit their changed needs.
The master bath had been dominated by a large Jacuzzi bathtub accessed by slippery and unsafe marble steps. A small shower and single vanity no longer met the owners' needs, and there was a separate toilet and bidet in the ensuite bathroom.
Bathroom designer Janice Teague, CKD, CBD, was asked to redesign the space and create a restful, spa-like environment.
"We removed the Jacuzzi and replaced it with a smaller, more functional, free-standing soaking tub. The bidet was also removed, which created more space for a much larger shower with a rainhead and various body sprays. Without the large tub, there was enough space in the bathroom for two separate vanities," she says.

"As well as providing a bigger floor area, this layout gave the bathroom a more open atmosphere," says Teague.
The owners admired Japanese interior design and wanted this simple, minimalist style for their bathroom.
"We decided on the natural look of a lava stone soaking tub that sits on a bed of small river rocks. The tub is now the focal point of the room," says one of the owners.
To complement the natural materials, limestone was selected for the floor, the walls of the shower enclosure and behind the vanities. Dark-stained maple cabinetry has simple contoured doors and honed marble countertops. Drawers provide storage for the owners' personal items, while the open bases add to the spacious feel of the room.

Lighting can be altered to create a variety of moods in the bathroom. Soffit lighting above the bath and vanities can be operated independently of the ceiling, shower and sconce lighting.
"We wanted our bathroom to have a serene quality to counteract the activity throughout the rest of the house, and to provide us with a tranquil, private retreat," says the homeowner.
