Natural appeal

Wood grains and natural materials give this room a spa-like atmosphere

When planning a room, the simplest look is sometimes the hardest to achieve. This was true for interior designer Therese Baron Gurney when she was asked to create a restful, relaxed and orderly bathroom in an uneven, oversized space.

Baron Gurney responded to the challenge with plans for a sophisticated looking spa that would emphasize a sense of ease and order.

The scope of the design included enlarging the shower, reconfiguring the entire space and adding new interior finish materials on all surfaces. Most importantly, every vertical surface needed to be consistent.

"The bathroom's overall theme involved keeping the materials and surfaces looking architectural but understated," says Baron Gurney.

To accomplish this precise installation, Baron Gurney made a grid pattern with the wood paneling and selected only natural materials.

"I chose simply honed limestone tiles, riftsawn maple and sandblasted glass. In fact, everything in this bathroom is selected to reflect the client's keen feel for modern sensibility," she says.

Baron Gurney enlarged the scale of the grid to fill the large space with order. To unify the look of the room, she carried the grid onto the cabinetry, the limestone tiles and the frosted glass tiles in the shower.

"This was challenging because it's easy to imply a grid on a one dimensional space but much more complex to do so on multiple walls."

Removing a wall, and expanding into unused space doubled the size of the shower. The area includes several shower heads, a bench and a frosted glass accent wall.

Two separate vanities were added to enhance the bathroom's functionality and give the house's occupants individual personal areas. Additional amenities include radiant flooring, a television and Kohler shower lights. A separate space is provided for the toilet, and a telephone.
