Here you were, just off to powder your nose, when greeted by this immersive space complete with giant Buddha, dark battens and industrial chic tapware

Design points

  • We were engaged in this project to refine the design, and work through the material selection process.
  • Our homeowner wanted to create an aspirational powder room that would be used by guests.
  • Creating a space that had a unique point of view was important – it also needed to reflect the linear elements used in other areas of the home.
  • The use of battening as cladding within the powder room plays off the oak staircase in the foyer, and unifies the space.

  • The finer battening to the powder room walls takes on a new appeal, with its effect on the light play across the surface giving vertical dimension to an otherwise dark space.
  • The oak battened screen reaffirms the lineal element.
  • The inclusion of the wall mural adds a playful element.
  • The powder room is used predominately by guests to the home on the ground floor – being the only public bathroom on the ground floor it is used by anyone within the home. It is situated off the foyer and just down from the living areas.
  • This project is home to a married couple with adult children. They have a large, close family and lots of friends. They love to entertain, with good food, music and drinks.
  • As it is a powder room, generally, it is only used by one person at a time. However, given its size and location it also is a good spot to check yourself in the mirror before popping back out to the living areas.
