Jewel in the crown
A passion for India inspired this bathroom
Many travellers bring back memories and mementoes on their return home. But the owners of this house took their lifelong passion for India one step further, recreating all the colour and vibrancy of the Indian subcontinent in their new bathroom.
Architect Peter Christoff says the owners wanted the room to have a strong Indian flavour. At the same time the design needed to be simple, but not basic.
Rather than introduce a lot of tile work, Christoff chose to line key walls with large glass panels over a decorative screenprinted film of classical Hindu goddesses.

"The owners had many photos and books for us to study, so we did a series of sketches," the architect says. "The images from these sketches were screenprinted onto film that was sandwiched between two large glass plates. The wall has the added advantage of being easy to clean."
A band of small grey-green mosaic tiles at the base of the shower wall extends around the room.
Christoff and his design team specified glazed, shopfront-style doors to the bathroom. But because the room adjoins an informal living area beside the kitchen, a degree of privacy was essential. The solution was an electronic translucent roller blind overprinted with a temple and warrior scene.
Just inside the room, a hot pink shot silk drape from India adds a touch of theatre and helps to screen the toilet room. The toilet is concealed behind a double-glazed wall, which is painted a glossy black on one side, and a bold shiny red on the other.
"These wonderful colours reinforce the Indian palette," says the architect. "So, too does the commissioned sandstone wall plaque mounted on the fence beyond the window.
For simplicity, the vanity is pure white, with skewed aluminium drawer door pulls, and the mixer is wall mounted.
