Design brief
Our Applecross, Perth homeowners came to us wanting a glamorous ensuite with a layout that would meet their needs for wheelchair accessibility.
Owner requests- It was extremely important to the client that their ensuite did not look like a disabled bathroom while meeting Australian accessibility standards and regulations.
- Make everyday wheelchair use easier
- Luxurious penthouse atmosphere
advertisement
- Being an apartment moving plumbing was tricky
- Existing bidet created an obstacle for the toilet
- Access into the shower with the wheelchair was not easy
- Nowhere to sit while using the shower, making everyday showering hard
Design statement
The proposed layout included the removal of a large, unused corner spa that was taking up valuable space.
Gaining the corner of the room allowed us to create an opening from the ensuite into the walk-in robe, integrating the rooms.
We developed a dual-purpose vanity that includes pocket doors below the left basin which can be closed, imitating a standard wall hung vanity.
Meeting Australian standards, we lowered the vanity height to be accessible from the wheelchair and a standing position as well.
Due to plumbing restrictions, we added a new wall behind the vanity to hide waste pipes.
The existing bidet was not being used and was removed, allowing us to measure around the toilet to ensure a wheelchair turn circle diameter.
The existing enclosed shower was hard to access, so we created a curved wall to divide the room which achieves the ideal wheelchair turn circle.
A shower seat runs along the back wall, with wall recess storage and hand shower at a reachable height when sitting.
Marble porcelain panels radiate a sense of opulence with their light tone complementing the natural light in the room.
For safety reasons we ensured that nonslip rated panels were selected.
