Deceptively spacious
High ceilings, clerestory windows and a freestanding vanity create an illusion of space in this compact powder room
By taking an innovative approach to space, even the smallest powder room can be designed to feel expansive and inviting.
Jackie Naylor worked on the interior design of this new home from the planning stages onward. The owners wanted the whole house, including the first-floor powder room, to be contemporary in style, with simple, minimalist lines and a muted green color scheme.

The powder room is narrow with 12ft-high ceilings, so to make it seem larger, Naylor floated the vanity above the floor. Clerestory windows provide a sense of space beyond the room and bring additional natural light into it.
To provide a semi-private area for the toilet without blocking light or constructing a more solid wall, a floor-to-ceiling mesh curtain separates it from the vanity.
"We selected a mix of dark and light wood tones to add depth and contrast to the room, and the copper vessel and brushed nickel wall faucets give the space an artistic, but sophisticated look," says Naylor.
