This comfortable master bathroom echoes the traditional Cape Cod feel of the residence

Two prime considerations behind an effective bathroom design are how it will relate to the rest of the home, and how to maximise efficiency within the constraints of the physical space.

The owners of this bathroom asked designer Jewell Cassells to create a chic, private ensuite that would be in keeping with the Cape Cod atmosphere running through the rest of the home.

"In response to this brief, I introduced classic panel-fronted vanity cabinetry and a matching bathroom door, teamed with solid marble surfaces," says Cassells. "The cabinetry is painted white, which is in keeping with this New England style."

The long, narrow bathroom, by architect Michael Wyatt, is divided into three spaces, with the toilet cubicle at one end, the shower stall at the other, and an inset bath and surround between the two.

"Breaking up the footprint in this way tends to square up an elongated space," says the designer. "Similarly, I opted for a series of mirrors opposite to help segment the long run of wall space. The four framed mirrors also provide a decorative focus and, through reflections, add to the overall sense of roominess."

Another feature detail of this project is the railing grid that fronts the bathtub this was a request of the owners. It combines a loose connection to the 1930s Cap Cod ambience with the advantages of improved safety and making a handy place to hang towels, Cassells says.
