Black-and-white photographs, mirrors and marble create a 1930s Hollywood atmosphere in this powder room
The exuberant look of 1930s Art Deco can seem outlandish in a contemporary home but if there's one space where it is possible to go all out with this aesthetic, it's a powder room.
Before renovating, this house was made up of two 1930s units designed in an Art Deco style. When designer Lorna Wallace combined the two units into a single family home, she retained an essence of the original look in most rooms, but dedicated the powder room entirely to the era.

"I went for Hollywood Art Deco, rather than a more muted Southern Hemisphere Art Deco look. But two black-and-white prints depicting images of the time, such as the woman in the swimsuit, were taken much more recently," she says.
In the powder room, Statuario marble makes up the vanity and wall surround, and the basin is Carrera. The walls are vinyl wallpaper in watermelon pink. Wallace says the colour makes a bold statement, and the surface is also splash resistant.
"We designed the mirror and wall sconces especially for this space. The intersecting geometric shapes and lines reference the Deco style."
