In a modestly sized studio, it is likely most of your kingdom will be on view from the bed. However, you can soften the closeness of your quarters a minimalist approach is the key.

The owner of this studio unit asked designer Debra Brockman to create a cool, contemporary environment for the smallish space. Part of the agenda was a compact, fully functional kitchen on show to all areas of the room, says Brockman.

"In response, I created an all-encompassing cabinet unit with the outer end and countertop in stainless steel and the cabinet doors and drawers in black. The sink is part of the custom countertop and this, the cooktop and pop-up rangehood are all recessed, so only a pared-back form is seen from across the room.

"There is some limited detailing mainly a slender negative edge but recessed finger-grip handles and magnetic pulls ensure the overall look is decidedly planar and minimalist."

Despite this, every possible convenience is tucked into the sleek cabinetry a microwave, refrigerator, storage with high-end runners and dividers, and a pull-out waste bin all fit snugly into the compact, sculptural cabinet.

The surfaces surrounding the kitchen add to its simple, strong impact. Windows with average outlooks were screened out by floor-to-ceiling operable translucent panels. These create a light, ethereal backdrop.

Brockman painted the studio white, to imply space, adding an accent wall of textured wallpaper in gunmetal, and honed Shanxi stone tile floors. Their rich, dark hues complement and are reflected in the stainless steel sides of the understated but fully equipped kitchen.
