T he focus of good design always encompasses functionality, but pushing the boundaries in the bathroom can have striking results.

This modernist his-and-hers bathroom, designed by Gail Green of Green & Company, features three evenly divided spaces. A walk-in shower, accessible from either side, separates one area from the other, with each toilet and hand basin placed on opposite walls.

"While clearly defined as individual rooms, the spaces remain open to each other, creating a crisp, clean airy feeling," says Green.

Contrasting colors, shapes and finishes help to create visual drama. The shower and walls behind the hand basins are finished in dark-brown mosaic tiles, randomly interspersed with tiles of reflective silver. To soften these hard, dark surfaces, the dry areas are clad in rectangular white leather tiles.

The strong linear forms of the square console basins, glass shelves and frameless mirrors are offset by cylindrical chrome light sconces, curved toilets and a round medicine cabinet.

Accessories and fixtures are kept to a minimum simple lever faucets, suspended towel rails, hand-held mirrors and a white, leather banquette lend a crisp elegance to the design.
