Sun shower
This compact bathroom combines a simple aesthetic with the option of showering in the great outdoors
Often a home built close to the sea features several interior design nods to its location. A bolder concept might take this a step further, introducing a bathroom area that not only reflects the seaside environment, but actually steps out into it.
This modest-sized bathroom is made up of three distinct spaces: a vanity area, an indoor shower, and a connecting outdoor shower, perched two stories above the ground. Designed by owner-architect Mark Hutker, the sunny bathroom has an understated marine aesthetic reflected in pared-back vanities, shiplap ceilings and an overall emphasis on natural materials.

"The vanities comprise a steel-rung frame with ash shelves, several loose wood utility boxes and a stone countertop," says Hutker. "A mirror-backed shelving unit alongside brings additional light into the east-facing bathroom.
"I designed this open unit specifically so as not to hide attractive cosmetics away behind closed cupboard doors."
Hutker says he had occasion to shower and shave in the outdoors on a European holiday a couple of years ago and decided he would like a similar experience in his own residence. The resulting external structure is affectionately known as the shark cage by the Hutker family.
"This outdoor shower space is closed off with nautical canvas sheets tied to a frame on two sides," says Hutker. "The third side with a more private outlook is left open so the bather can enjoy the ocean views. The sun on your face, the scent of the salt spray, extended views of the natural surroundings, and the rain showerhead all contribute to the open-air experience."
