Being able to work from home can be a great lifestyle opportunity, particularly if your property has a lovely outlook. However, most of us probably prefer to have some separation between business and family areas.

The owners of the property featured on these pages asked Signature Homes to design and build a contemporary-style home on a coastal site they owned. Their brief was for a home that provided good open-plan family living spaces that took advantage of the harbour views. The design also had to include two rooms that could be used as office and hobby space.

Director of Signature Homes Craig Williams says the owners stipulated that these two rooms needed to have some privacy and to be in some way separated from the remainder of the house.

"Visitors had to be able to come into the office area without passing through the main family living areas," he says.

The views dictated that the main living areas should be across the back of the house, opening out on two sides to terraces and an enclosed courtyard. This courtyard provides an alternative outdoor living area for times when the wind is blowing onto the main terrace. Upstairs are the master suite, two additional bedrooms and a family bathroom.

Because the property is fairly long and narrow, the layout is based around an elongated gallery that functions like a central spine. It runs from the front door and entry foyer through to the rear of the house, finishing up in the main living areas.

To ensure the long hallway has an open and spacious feel, it is a generous 1.8m wide. On one side light floods in through glass doors that access a sheltered courtyard, while a voided space above it opens onto the second level of the house. Large windows along one wall of the upper level also bring plenty of natural light into the hallway.

"The office and hobby room are located towards the front of the house, with access from the hallway. This has allowed the owners to achieve their objective of privacy for the family and a clear separation between visitors to the office and living spaces," says Williams.
