Sometimes it can be difficult to pigeonhole a company's role on an upscale project like Westfield Riccarton. With aspects ranging from pouring concrete for crane reinforcing to structural strengthening, laying floors and installing fit-out elements, even the term multitasking might seem an understatement.

CBD Construction undertook all of the above, being involved in the project from the outset. Pouring 100m³ of concrete to anchor the crane was fundamental to raising the new level. The next contribution was to strengthen the existing structure, including increasing the size of existing beams, and introducing additional earthquake-proofing in the form of sheer walls.

Director Jim Fry says working within an operating retail project on this scale had its challenges.

"Our teams were on site 24/7 for three months to ensure we had all elements in place that were prerequisite to other stages of the construction," says Fry. "We worked around the ongoing operation of the existing retailers one sheer wall was built right up through the Whitcoulls store."

CBD poured the concrete floors on the new level, including the central areas of the Cafe Court, which were subsequently tiled. Concrete reinforcing for the feature timber floors was also provided by CBD.

"In addition, our fit-out skills were called upon to install the Moroccan backlit screens that are a recurring element in the decor, the giant marquee lights in the s and privacy screens in the same area."
