Just as medical advice is best taken from a professional, for good workmanship and peace of mind, the construction of a new home should be placed in the hands of a qualified builder. One way to ensure that your builder is a professional is to choose one that is certified. Certified Builders Association of New Zealand (CBANZ) members must complete rigorous testing and training to become trade qualified, says Derek Baxter, CEO of CBANZ. "This training includes principles of work ethics, such as acting with honesty, integrity and responsibility, and dealing fairly and equitably with clients and industry professionals alike. Members must provide trade and client references to prove their work and business skills."Members of CBANZ are obliged to apply for a 10-year Homefirst Builder's Guarantee from Builtin New Zealand Ltd when undertaking a new home build. Where the certified builder is the head contractor, this covers materials and work completed by them and the subcontractors engaged by them, subject to the limitations in the guarantee agreement.
