Smart street lighting - LED technology an energy-efficient lighting option from Opus International Consultants Ltd
LED technology an energy-efficient lighting option from Opus International Consultants Ltd
The infusion of LED technology is making fundamental changes to the way companies are designing street lighting. And it's not just due to the efficiency of the technology, but also its flexibility, says Andy Collins, team leader of lighting design at Opus International Consultants.
"By coupling this LED technology with new telemanagement streetlight control systems, Opus can give local bodies the ability to adapt street lighting to suit the conditions, maximising effectiveness, while minimising costs to the taxpayer."
Collins says the complex systems installed in areas around Eden Park were among the first in Australasia to deploy these emerging technologies. But already Opus is looking to translate this experience into major infrastructure projects.
"Traffic detection systems allow us to tie the luminance to traffic flow," he says. "So when the volume reduces, the lights are gradually dimmed. In emergency situations, lights can be brought back to full luminance at the push of a button on a wireless remote.
"LED technology also provides high-performing optics, reducing intrusive light spill into residential properties nearby."
Collins says cities in Europe are embracing the power-saving flexibility of LEDs for streets, parks and highways. With a history of innovation and dynamic solutions, the Opus team is making sure that New Zealand is taking full advantage of the opportunities.
