Serene green – the restful colour of nature

A selection of feature tiles from The Tile Depot proved the perfect way to bring a touch of the outdoors into this home's modern bathroom, ensuite and laundry

Drawing on the expansive semi-rural views and the homeowners’ love of natural tones and design, the pavilion style home by David Reid Homes features strategic green interior highlights to create a serene and tranquil ambience.

From the homeowners: “We love the beautiful greens and browns of nature; however at the same time we didn’t want a heavy look – it was important to keep things light.”

Interiors expert Melanie Sa'u, of Cube Dentro, evoked the new homeowners’ love of natural tones and materials throughout the home, with the choice of green hues and natural elements informing many of her design decisions.

Her choice of green to bring balance and natural harmony is particularly apparent in the bathroom, ensuite and laundry.

In these spaces, a selection of various green feature tiles is matched with supporting neutral greys and charcoal tiles to harmonious, restful effect. All tiles are from specialists The Tile Depot.

To achieve flow and connectivity, the designer chose the same pale stone-effect porcelain tiles – Cordoba Pearl – for the walls in both bathrooms.

Cordoba Pearl is a gentle warm grey limestone effect tile with a fine consistent grain and uniform background that introduces the elegance and organic character of natural stone in a porcelain format.

Running these large-format tiles up to the bathroom ceilings adds to the overall feel of spaciousness and modern luxury.

A sense of depth is created in both the bathrooms and laundry by using a darker tile on the floors. Cordoba Black – a charcoal version of Cordoba Pearl – flows seamlessly into the bathrooms’ showers and under the wall hung vanities as well as offering a practical and durable floor in the laundry.

Three different feature tiles were selected to evoke the flow of greenery through the home and also to introduce a unique character to each of the tiled spaces.

Hexagonal Beton Green Echo mosaics were introduced as a feature splashback surface in the laundry; while the larger Hexa Green Echo gloss tiles have a starring role in the master ensuite shower. Lastly, Circular Penny Round Jade mosaics appear on the vanity wall in the main bathroom. The Penny Round Jade mosaic is a contemporary, stylish geometric tile in an almost sea foam green.

These tiles, with a hint of blue and grey mixed in, are not too bright or too bold despite their striking format. And all three making a restful and natural addition to what is to be a retirement home for its nature- and design-loving owners.

Considered to be the most restful colour on the eye, the choice of green for the feature ensuite, bathroom and laundry tiles was a huge success – creating serene/tranquil spaces where unwinding and taking a more leisurely pace comes naturally.
