Riders on the storm
An image of rock legend Jim Morrison creates a radical backdrop in this bathroom for big boys
With homeowners who have a passion for pop culture and a desire for a guest bathroom that makes a strong statement, the designer of this bathroom didn't have too far to look for the inspiration she needed.
The apartment, designed by Shaynna Blaze of Blank Canvas Interiors, has an entertainment area, which the owners saw as a place where the big boys could chill out, watch movies and play computer games.
"They wanted the small guest bathroom that is attached to this living area to be fun and funky, with a decor that would blow people away as soon as they walked through the door," says Blaze.

Aware of the owners' interest in pop culture, Blaze selected an iconic image of singer Jim Morrison, which she had digitally printed onto three large sheets of glass to create the walls of the shower enclosure.
To maximize the impact of the image, it is reflected in a mirror above the toilet on the opposite wall of the bathroom, ensuring it can also be enjoyed by those using the handbasin. To add an unexpected little twist, however, the mirror is made from a single sheet of moulded acrylic with four fisheye bulges blown into it, slightly distorting the image when it is reflected.
"Having the bathroom lights on a sensor means the room illuminates as soon as the door opens, and the whole effect is that much stronger," says Blaze.
Fluorescent lights inset behind the moulded acrylic handbasin make it glow, spreading light around one corner of the room, so the bathroom feels larger. To compensate for the lack of windows, Blaze clad the floor and walls in pewter-colored tiles with a ribbed surface that reflects the lights.
