Refined and minimalist

Monochromatic, pared back, and accented with refined joinery touches and Mid-century furniture – this designer's own interior reflects a luxurious minimalism

Interior by Sammy Kairouz, C. Kairouz Architects

From the owner/interior designer:

Context

Minimalistic in nature, but luxurious in expression and styling, this apartment boasts a harmony of base materials; concrete, rich black veneer joinery and stainless steel.

Nestled among hills, the apartment is the personal residence head of interiors at  C. Kairouz Architects, Sammy Kairouz.

The generously sized home is situated amongst a set of revitalised and new dwellings by C. Kairouz Architects.

The brief

With minimalism at the core of design choices, the desire was for a refined space – eliminating the superfluous and highlighting the qualities that enrich life, spaces, people – a place for reprieve and energetic positivity.

With its monochromatic palette, this is a place to engage the senses and enjoy the stillness.

The apartment showcases an interior designer’s connection to his design identity with enthusiasm and appetite.

Key challenges

The challenge was to curate an organic environment, the tone of every element to contribute to a wider sculptural intention.

Layering of linens, leather, lambswool, suede and stone, creates a tactile and texturally abundant interior.

Selections of iconic 60s and 70s pieces of Italian and Australian Mid-century furniture are thoughtfully arranged and a haunting Tom Adair art piece adorns the entryway.

The designer's holistic and unencumbered approach resulted in a quiet representation of luxurious minimalism.

The solutions

The tailored layout evokes a balanced and fluid movement as you journey through the space.

Floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall glazing admits the northern and western sun, flooding the rooms with natural light the rooms.

In addition, the spaces have direct access to the soft, layered, landscaped terrace.

The clean, refined lines and detailing – such as full-height pivot doorways, shadow skirting and curved walls – further soften the interior and allow the passage through each space to evolve seamlessly.

The owner, our head of interiors, Sammy Kairouz, became involved early on and crafted a separate interior structure and individual finishes for the space.

His holistic and unencumbered approach results in an interior of luxurious simplicity.
