Wight Aluminium supplied door and window joinery for the Wharewaka building

Sustainable design initiatives for Wharewaka included cross ventilation and high-performance double glazing. These initiatives helped determine the specifications for the aluminium joinery, glass and automated window winding systems, which were all supplied and installed by Wight Aluminium.
General manager Des Benson says all the joinery was custom manufactured to meet these specifications and the current New Zealand Building Code. However, the unusual and unique design of the building required a number of innovative design features.

"We used Architectural Profiles' Vantage 150mm structural glaze system and Vantage Architectural bifold system. But these systems don't make allowances for opening sash windows, as they are most commonly installed in fully air conditioned buildings. Consequently, Architectural Profiles designed a new sash system and cut dies that were tested to ensure they could withstand the wind loads. We then manufactured the sash windows along with the rest of the joinery."
To meet the environmental requirements, the joinery features UltraGlass Synergy high-performance double glazing with argon gas. Window Control Systems worked closely with Wight Aluminium and consulting engineers to supply and install an automated natural ventilation system that is cost effective and energy efficient. Two custom-built control panels from German company D + H Mechatronic operate more than 180 window drives.
