The pavilion-style architecture and white interior of this house creates a relaxing master bedroom with a high gabled ceiling reminiscent of a tent

Modern master suites are all about escape and retreat, but there are many ways to evoke a relaxing ambiance.

The design of this master suite reflects the pavilion-style architecture of the house, which sits on a cliff above a picturesque bay. Architect Walter Barda of Walter Barda Design says the design is characteristic of the firm's work.

"Many of our projects are planned so each space is contained, with its own identifiable ceiling. In doing this, the house effectively becomes a collection of linked pavilions."

This suite, which is on the top level of the three-story house, has a high gabled ceiling in the bedroom, with a similar pyramid ceiling in the bathroom.

"These ceilings center the rooms and create a sense of height and spaciousness," says Barda. "With both the ceilings and walls lined with white painted wood boards, the interior has a tent-like quality."

The effect is not cavernous, however the ceilings drop to a low plateau at the sides to enclose the spaces, creating a sense of intimacy.

To maximize the spectacular views across the bay, large sliders open up to a deck. There is also a day bed positioned to capture the view. White painted wood blinds provide privacy and dappled light.

The bathroom, behind white louvered doors, continues the soft neutral color palette. The walls and floor are lined with Botticino marble tiles, which contrast the crisp white of the CaesarStone vanity top and tub surround.

A long, furniture-style vanity enhances the romantic look of the suite. The unit incorporates his-and-hers basins and drawers, and a slatted shelf with hampers for linen storage.

Like most luxurious bathrooms, this room also features a large soaking tub positioned beneath the windows so the owners can enjoy the view. With the louvered bathroom doors fully opened, the entire suite effectively becomes one large space that allows easy communication between the bedroom and bathroom.

Additional amenities include a walk-in closet at the rear of the room, behind the bed. There is also a separate toilet room and a shower to the right of the vanity.
