Aside from reducing the effects of climate change, buildings that use ecologically sustainable design (ESD) practices are also setting benchmarks in what is a relatively new aspect of construction.

As a multifaceted engineering company, Meinhardt is at the forefront of ESD practices both here and overseas. The company assists its clients in transforming existing structures, or creating new buildings, using ESD principles. Environmental sustainability is a term that has gained currency in the construction industry, says Meinhardt's Janos Baranyai.

"Everyday life revolves around buildings the home, the office, shops and hospitals, to name just a few. We want to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and have proper lighting and protection from air pollution. And we want to do all this in the most economically viable way. Therefore, it is imperative that an equilibrium is reached between environmental responsibility, economic sustainability and user needs."

Meinhardt's Building Science Group provides technical leadership to its ESD initiatives. The group consists of PhD-qualified scientists with engineering backgrounds, together with highly specialised engineers.

"Maximising opportunity and deriving an immediate return on investment are key to meeting financial and environmental sustainability targets in today's volatile market," says Baranyai. "Meinhardt meets these needs through establishing pre-purchase feasibility, property assessment, innovative planning, and by designing to client specifications. We provide clients with a range of technical evaluation services through our asset management and building sciences groups. Structural, facade, infrastructure and environmental consultancies complement the service range."

Light and energy solutions are created through the company's extensive modelling capabilities: NABERS/ABGR predictive modelling, thermal CFD modelling, the modelling of daylight and lighting systems, dynamic facade systems, energy recovery systems and co-tri generation systems. The modelling of alternative ventilation and air conditioning systems includes chilled beams, displacement ventilation and ground source systems. Meinhardt's focus on energy efficiency, building tuning, energy auditing and Green Star assessment leaves no stone unturned.
