Light and airy
With white-painted walls, wood beams and a wall of windows, this galley-style bathroom has a spa-like feel
Whether a bathroom feels spacious and airy, or small and cluttered is frequently a result of the colors and materials that have been selected and the way they are applied.
The designers of the master suite featured here wanted the bathroom to be open, with good air circulation and natural light. They divided up the space so the shower and tub were separated, and there were two hand basins in different areas.
To maximize the natural light and the air flow, designers Todd Pritchett and Craig Dixon gave the bathroom a galley-like layout. From the master bedroom, doors open into the first section of the bathroom, which contains a hand basin and a tub. Past the tub and through a second doorway is the shower and another handbasin, plus space for storage of towels and soaps.

"This arrangement allowed us to separate the functions in the bathroom, and meant both the tub and shower could be on an outside wall of the house with opening windows," says Pritchett.
To further increase the amount of light and the feeling of space, the entry from the bedroom into the bathroom is via two French doors, glazed with panes of clear glass.
"Both sections of the bathroom feel very open and spacious, because you can see out through the clear glass doors into the sunroom and across the bedroom," Dixon says.
Louvre doors opposite the bathtub provide access to the closet and dressing room. The toilet, with a mirrored-glass French door, is beside the wardrobe.
The light atmosphere has been emphasized with the selection of materials. Warm white painted, tongue and groove wood was chosen for the walls and teamed with white paneled cabinetry and dark-stained beams on the ceiling.
Light-colored limestone countertops and subtle green, mosaic-tiled backsplashes behind the hand basins also contribute to the spa-like look. An undermounted bathtub and sinks add to the clean, uncluttered look of the bathroom.
