When designing the high, vaulted ceilings that contribute to the impressive sense of space and grandeur in the atria, the issue of sound levels and echoes needed to be factored in.To address this effect in the atria of the new BNZ building, Asona, a privately owned New Zealand company that specialises in manufacturing high-performance, sound-absorbing ceiling and wall panels, worked closely with engineer Norman Disney Young. For the atria runway ceilings, Asona manufactured and supplied its Triton 50 and 25 Cloud panels in grey. These high-specification panels are designed to absorb sound and reduce reverberation. To meet the brief, they had to have wrapped edges for a frameless look, be attached directly to the structure with concealed fixings and be non-combustible. Asona director Neil Ridgway says no small part of the challenge was to provide the panels in a uniform grey finish at an economical price."To achieve this, rather than spray-painting the panels, which is expensive and prone to streaking, rolls of glass-tissue facing were coated in Europe to the selected colour, giving a superior finish at a lower cost. The grey tissue was laminated in our Auckland plant to make the Sonatex facings, then wrapped over the glass fibre core to give a frameless look," he says.Asona also manufactured and installed Fabwall 100 and Fabwall 50 fabric wrapped acoustic panels for meeting rooms and walls in the atria cafe. For these areas, the brief was to reduce mid- and low-frequency noise and give an attractive, decorative finish. As well as its high sound-absorbing qualities, this product offers designers the creative freedom to select fabric finishes to match the rest of the interior decor.
