Dramatic allure - family and entertainer's kitchen by Carolyn Walker Davis
Family and entertainer's kitchen by Carolyn Walker Davis

Sometimes, merging disparate elements can create a fresh, versatile aesthetic. The marriage of retro-style appliances and crisp cabinetry, for example, can create a space as well suited to a black-tie party as a family dinner gathering.
This kitchen forms part of a substantial renovation and extension to a 1970s residence. Created by architect Carolyn Walker Davis, the kitchen reflects the homeowner's high fashion style and her love of classic Aga appliances.
"We took the deep tones of the feature Aga range as a lead for the classic, bold design," says Walker Davis. "The near-black aubergine wall color contrasts with the glossy white cabinet surfaces, creating a monochromatic aesthetic. Another reason for choosing this rich hue is that it holds its own against the dark wooden floor.

"Easy-to-clean Euro-style cabinetry doors were used and the dark quartzite countertops are durable surfaces for a young family."
To emphasize the Aga range, the backsplash behind it is black ceramic brick tiles set in the traditional subway tile pattern a subtle feature that works with the overall decor.
"Apart from this simple pattern, the kitchen celebrates solid forms and unadorned planes," says Walker Davis. "The monolithic wall divides the living areas from the kitchen, and conceals structural support for the open-plan space."

A major factor that shaped the space was the need to maximize the views. To this end, Walker Davis kept most cabinets below the counters and introduced floating LED-lit stairs to allow light flow and views in this area of the room.
"This chic, functional kitchen is also about symmetry and rhythm. The two upper cabinets are in balance, dishwashers flank the farmhouse sink, and a workspace is recessed between the two columns of the central dividing wall."
