Drama, good looks and functionality are served

Specific requests from the homeowners together with the designers’ adroit responses created this standout kitchen

Designed by Morgan Cronin, of Morgan Kitchens

From the designer:

For this kitchen, the owners required a new kitchen to fit within the existing kitchen space.

And being a family home, they naturally wanted a kitchen that worked well for the whole family.

However one of the owners is a passionate accomplished chef, who likes to cook for pleasure and to entertain. As such, he needed a kitchen design that could both facilitate his high level of expertise and showcase his culinary skills, allowing guests to be able to gather and observe without actually entering his zone.

The owners liked the idea of a black kitchen and to extend the functionality they wanted to convert the old laundry into a scullery space.

Other requests were for open shelving to display the owners’ collection of cookbooks and a high bench that would suit the height of the existing window architrave.

To create the black kitchen required the cabinetry surfaces are in a Planked Wire Brushed Oak veneer, finished in Black Oil – matched with black interior hardware. The dramatic cabinetry is complemented by stainless steel appliances and other metal touches in the room. These include the steel shelving, a wall-mounted knife display and even the reflective underside of the ceiling mounted black-painted glass extractor.

The backdrop to the design is an iridescent tile – chosen by the owners – that works well with the dark cabinetry and the rich timber flooring.

Setting the kitchen straight on to an opening to the next room allowed for the sense of theatre without guests actually getting in the way.

The appliance requirements for the kitchen were as precise as for the design with the cooking owner having done his homework. These included the Sub-Zero Pro48 fridge, Wolf oven(s), Wolf gas hobs and a Bora Teppanyaki plate.

The existing dishwasher was retained while an Akira Tallboy Dishdrawer was added to the new scullery, along with a basic microwave.

In addition, large sinks and large bins were requested along with a Zenith sparkling/boiling water dispenser in an area that was accessible without having to enter the kitchen zone.
