Spanish accent

A Spanish quartz vanity, ceramic plaid wall tile and grass cloth wallpaper combine to create a sense of luxury in this powder room with optimised privacy – custom pendants complete the picture

Designed by Knight Varga Interiors

Setting

This powder room is part of a new home build we designed over three years from start to finish.

It is the only washroom on the main floor of the house, and it needed to have beautiful features to impress guests but also be durable enough to withstand daily use from the children (and husband).

The architectural style of the house leans contemporary with rich warm elements and we kept this style in mind when selecting materials.

Owner brief

The brief was to create a luxurious powder room, with a 'wow' factor for guest appeal, that feels like it would be found in a high-end designer boutique while.

Challenges

  • The room is long and narrow with high ceilings, and this is accentuated by high windows on the back wall.
  • The mechanical engineer needed to locate duct work in one corner of the room after construction began.
  • The floor in this area of the house is large format Dekton slabs so we needed to create warmth and balance with other materials.

Design solutions

To conceal the WC from the entry hall and downplay the overall length of the room, we added a privacy wall between the toilet and the vanity and then clad this in hardwood floorboards.

This created a visual break for the eye, disguising the overall length of the room. The hardwood is the same material used for flooring in other areas of the home for a nice consistency.

To balance the wood plank wall and clad the channel created for duct work we added a vertical slat wall.

The wood tones and textures are intentionally different to create warmth and interest while the horizontal and vertical elements play off the glossy ceramic tile at the vanity which has a subtle plaid pattern.

In addition, we finished all surfaces in either tile, wood or wallpaper to create the elevated boutique feel required.

Features

  • The sink and counter are custom made from the same slab of quartz and fabricated in Spain.
  • Tone on tone glossy ceramic plaid wall tile behind the vanity and toilet
  • Grass cloth wallpaper
  • Finish on the custom pendants selected to bring together the finishes in the room and tie into the rest of the house.
