Colour, texture, detail - Textural precast facade by Nauhria Precast enlivens Q theatre

Q theatre, beside the Auckland Town Hall and Aotea Square, provides plenty of visual drama, thanks to the three-dimensional, coloured and textural precast panels specified for the upper exterior facade.

Nauhria's Monarc Creative precast panels complement the historical brickwork of the adjacent buildings, while providing full functionality, including acoustic and environmental insulation.

Tony Nawisielski, Nauhria marketing manager, says the company worked closely with the architect, client and construction company to develop prototype samples. This allowed finetuning of the precast design attributes colour, texture and detail.

"Multiple planes within the design were slanted to three different mould-formed angles. All upward-facing planes were finished smooth off the form, while downward-facing planes were moulded with a stippled surface texture. The faces of the projecting squares were Monarc 5000-grade diamond honed.

"The fibreglass mould created for the tessellation-based design, known as a golygon, provided further challenges for Nauhria to resolve. The interwoven array of planes each required tapered sides and radiused corners to provide a clean release of the concrete panel. Continuity of the design's flow was precisely managed across both horizontal and vertical panel orientations throughout the facade."

Q's ground-level panels feature Monarc Oyster panels finished with Monarc's non-abrasive diamond brushed surface texture.
