Architect: Studio2 Architects

About the project: Studio2 Architects, designed this two-level beach house on the Coromandel Peninsula to aesthetically reflect its coastal environment, and to subtly build on the experience of being so close to the sea with a series of indoor and outdoor spaces that flow into each other, and can be used in different ways.

The Scandinavian-style interiors, lined with American oak, exude a sense of peace that gives the owners, a couple with three children, a tranquil space to socialise, relax and cook together during their breaks from the city.

The building design evolved from the idea of cottage, ecosystem, grass, hill, home, house, land lot, mountain, plant community, property, real estate, shrubland, sky, tree, brown, teal
The building design evolved from the idea of sculpture, building and the existing land form - working with the site.

On arrival, visitors are led upwards from ground level to the open-plan space containing the kitchen and living area with its sculptural, gyrofocus fireplace that hangs at the corner at which the two floor-to-ceiling glass walls, framing alternate views of Hahei Beach, meet.

On fine days, the sliding glass doors are left open so the sea air blows straight through the space, while in inclement weather, rolling wooden shutters screen it from the elements.

The wings of the house are positioned on the site to inform users of the different aspects of the site including orientation, sun and views.

The roof shape informs the internal spaces at the first floor through its folded geometry. These forms were perceived as a reference to the sand patterning on the immediate beach beyond and they give priority to the individual uses beneath.

The positioning of the two main building forms creates a courtyard to the North West.

The house also has the ability to transform with the use of sliding screens which open and close for the changing weather as well as manipulating the spaces for privacy or openness.

The house is a retreat from busy city life and is intended to be enjoyed by all.
