Developing a thriving retail business is about ensuring the shopper feels at home in the space. When the target market is focused on the sun, sea and surfing, that means a style that evokes a typical surfer hang-out is in order.

This was the environment that specialised fit-out company Cape Interior Construction was asked to create for the new Amazon concept store in Parnell, Auckland. The project involved turning a vacant warehouse into a colourful surf shack, something you might find beachside in Hawaii. Several disciplines were required to create the effect, says director Adrian Spalletta.

"As shopfitters in charge of the hard fit-out, we installed a new mezzanine floor, recycled hardwood floors, and introduced feature strip plywood panelling to walls, as well as loose and fixed joinery," says Spalletta.

In addition, the firm supervised subcontractors who addressed everything from the electrical and plumbing through to mechanical, structural steel, data, painting, carpet laying, and fire protection.

Building the feature panelling made up of 400mm strips of construction-grade ply was one of Cape Interior Construction's key contributions. This involved combining several finishes some blonded, some clear coated, some untreated and others fixed with the D side out. The finished effect creates visual interest and contrast to all the exposed timber framing.

Cape Interiors also fire rated the underside of the mezzanine level while maintaining the exposed structure. This was achieved with the application of an intumescent fire retardant spray.

"We were also asked to insulate the existing warehouse roof from below. This involved many hours, using multiple scissor lifts," says Spalletta.

Cape Interior Construction provides a complete service across the interiors spectrum, ranging from maintenance work, through office, retail and hospitality alterations and refurbishments to new fit-outs, building alterations and additions, and includes the management of all sub-trades.
