Best foot forward

In most new retail and commercial developments the designers pay just as much attention to the outdoor areas as they do the building interiors. The creation of campus-style environments with attractive, landscaped courtyards, promenades and alfresco dining areas is a key part of the design brief.

Q4 at Smales Farm on the North Shore is a prime example. This retail and commercial development features extensive outdoor areas, which are paved with Lifestyle Inglestone pavers from Jagas Paving, a boutique paving specialist.

Robert Sweet of Jagas Paving says the building's owners wanted an innovative, smart and cost-efficient pedestrian surface right through the public areas.

"The 40mm pavers were laid on a 25mm bed of mortar over unconventional substrate. After grouting, which did not require trowelling, the pavers were honed and sealed by Solid Floors. This paving system provides a similar appearance to factory-honed paving, but provides substantial cost savings," he says. "Additional savings may also be made on laying costs."

Sweet says the finished surface is completely flat, which makes it well suited to shopping centres and other places that have heavy pedestrian traffic.

Custom colours and finishes can be manufactured. For example, glass or marble can be incorporated into the aggregate mix if required.
