A touch of the Maldives in Epsom

This contemporary renovation has taken a somewhat enclosed and darkened interior to an open, light and spacious home the family has described as their “sanctuary”.

With a particular love of the Maldives and assistance from Julie Rees at Sojo Design, they have selected tiles from The Tile Depot that draw upon the stunning blues and whites of the Maldive environment to create bathroom spaces that “really take them back”.

The Maldives is an archipelago of over 1000 small jewel-like islands characterised by some of the clearest shallow waters and whitest sands to be found anywhere on earth. Surrounding these crystal-clear shallows are deep and abrupt drop-offs into the darkest, navy blue of the Indian Ocean.  

It is the bright white of the sands and the rich navy hues of the deep ocean, that inspired the selection of the Victoria Gypsum White and 4D Diamond Deep Blue tiles that adorn the bathroom and ensuite walls.

The bold geometric-patterned 4D Diamond Deep Blue tiles have been used to create a jaw-dropping feature wall in the main bathroom and detailed vertical panels in the ensuite. 

This feature tile is further complemented by the warm white of the softly textured Victoria Gypsum and gentle illumination from the LED mirrors. 

The effect is an encompassing sense of calm and serenity within these retreat-like spaces.

The floors in both the ensuite and bathroom are adorned with Industry Grigio 600x600mm porcelain floor tile. 

While this tile has a formed concrete design, it carries hints of a sandy shoreline and not only completes the sense of coastal influences on these spaces but is also a hugely practical and easy-care, matt tile. 

The overall effect are two stunning rooms, that while using the same tiles, each have a very distinct character.

Tiles from The Tile Depot were also used in the newly renovated kitchen. 

Where previously multi-coloured tiles adorned the old kitchen walls, they have been replaced with the natural timeless beauty of Stone Carrara Satin brick mosaic.

Extending the splashback tiles from benchtop to ceiling has really opened out the kitchen and achieved that sense of spaciousness the family was after.

The family are loving the tile selections they have made. 

They embarked upon the renovation with a concept in mind, and with a bit of help from Julie at Sojo Design were able to select Tile Depot tiles that both captured a touch of the Maldives and brightened their home. 

They found the entire process of selecting the tiles “easy and with no regrets” and the consensus within the family is that the 4D Diamond Deep Navy wall in the main bathroom is their favourite feature. 

While it might be a while before they can get back to the Maldives, the retreat-like spaces can help them reminisce.
